Southwest Airlines announced on May 29, 2009 it will add new fees for unaccompanied minors, and for passengers who bring small pets onboard. It will also increase the charge for checking a third piece of luggage and/or an overweight bag. For tickets purchased now for travel June 17 or later, Southwest will begin charging $25 each way for unaccompanied children ages 5 through 11. Also, beginning June 17, 2009, Southwest Airlines will charge $75 each way for small dogs and cats brought onboard (previously only service animals were allowed in the cabin), and the fee for a third checked bag or a bag more than 50 lbs. (but less than 71 lbs.) will increase from $25 to $50.
Delta Air Lines announced last week that it is amending its plan to charge $50 for second checked bags on international flights. Delta will now apply the fee only to routes between the United States and Europe. Delta will not charge a fee for the second checked bag on all other international destinations because competitors refused to institute a similar charge. This amends a previous Travel Alert – dated April 22, 2009. Delta CEO Richard Anderson previously announced that the second-bag fee would start July 1 for all international flights (except for service to and from Brazil, where federal regulators would not allow it).
