Sun Country Airlines, along with Petters Aviation (which owns all of Sun Country's voting shares), filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection today.
"We were forced to take this action as a result of recent events at Petters Group Worldwide," Sun Country CEO Stan Gadek said in a prepared statement.
Sun Country had planned on receiving an operating loan from The Petters Group to make it through this historically slow period of the year. However, Tom Petters is facing charges in a federal fraud case and Sun Country will not receive funds to improve the airline's cash position.
The bankruptcy filing gives the carrier some relief from its creditors as Sun Country restructures in bankruptcy. The airline previously was in bankruptcy and exited in 2002 under new ownership.
As of now, our sources indicate that Sun Country will fly its regular schedule during the bankruptcy. We will update you with any future developments.
