Continental, Sun Country and Frontier became the latest airlines to charge for the first checked bag, seeking to counter high fuel costs.
Continental Airlines will start charging a $15 fee on most domestic economy-class tickets, but EliteAccess customers, customers traveling on full-fare economy (Y) class tickets and military personnel will be exempt from the charge. The charge will affect passengers who purchase tickets for travel on or after October 7, 2008 within the U.S., Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Canada.
Sun Country Airlines will begin charging a $12 fee for the first checked bag affecting passengers who purchase tickets for travel on or after October 1, 2008. Exempt passengers to this policy include: first-class passengers, military personnel traveling on official orders, and unaccompanied minors.
Frontier Airlines will start charging the first bag fee of $15 for travel on or after November 1, 2008
Related item: United Airlines will increase the second checked bag fee from $25 to $50, for travel on or after November 10, 2008. This charge is in addition to the $15 first checked bag fee. Exceptions to the new fee include: passengers traveling in First or Business class; MileagePlus 1K, Premier Executive, Premier or Premier Associate members; Star Alliance or Silver members; active military personnel traveling on orders.
