FAA Grants Delta Air Lines A Single Operating Certificate

DATE: January 5, 2010
ATTN: Travel Manager/Arranger/Travelers

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) gave Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines permission to fly as one airline officially on December 31, 2009.  Delta had been operating NWA as a subsidiary since it purchased it in October 2008.

Travelers won’t notice immediate changes – but in the next few months, Northwest tickets and fares will shift to Delta’s system and all flights will use the Delta name.  Additionally, the NWA website will be shut down, sending travelers to the Delta website.

The single operating certificate is largely symbolic.  It comes after more than a year of intense work to integrate nearly 400 manuals and 100 operating specifications/process at both airlines.  What remains is to finish integrating many technology systems – Delta plans to finish merging ticketing and reservations by March 31, 2010.
